My hair became a symbol of this struggle, something I felt pressured to change. At 12 years old, I made the drastic decision to cut off all of my curls, wanting to fit in and erase what I felt made me different.

The experience of cutting my hair was a turning point. It made me realize that changing myself to fit in wasn’t the answer. It led me to a journey of self-discovery and embracing my curly hair as a part of my Hispanic heritage.

It’s important to see ourselves reflected in the media, in the world around us. Seeing successful Hispanic role models like Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Enrique Iglesias, Mario Lopez, and more, helped me realize that my heritage was something to be celebrated, not hidden.
It’s through representation that we can inspire others to embrace their heritage and feel proud of who they are.
